COURSE CONTENT AND DESCRIPTION

If you're a complete beginner at Spanish, we recommend that you take Spanish Lessons in Buenos Aires as these will provide an excellent base to learn from. Both private lessons and university courses are well structured and the teachers usually have a high level of English, which makes them ideal for beginners. If you're not a beginner, we'll ensure that you are allocated to the correct level.

PRIVATE LESSONS:
These will be held at a nearby language centre with a qualified Spanish teacher. They are monthly courses of 10 hours per week (five two hour lessons) and are individually tailored to your level of expertise. The lessons are usually arranged on a one to one basis where you will receive individual tuition and lessons prepared especially for you. During your course, one lesson each week will be held at a cultural place to enable you to practice you Spanish in real life situations.

These lessons can be taken for a period of one month or more and have no set start and finish dates. Private lessons are recommended if you are a complete beginner and want to spend time learning at your own pace. This is also a great option if you want to combine Spanish lessons with another programme, such as teaching.
At the end of the course, you’ll receive a Certificate issued by the Institute your teacher belongs to, stating that you have done the course, to what level, and the duration in hours of the course you have completed.

SPANISH COURSES AT THE UNIVERSITY OF BUENOS AIRES:
The University of Buenos Aires is divided into various schools, one of which is the schools of Agronomy. This school has set up its own language extension which runs specially designed courses to help foreigners learn Spanish. An excellent element of this course is that it includes visits to museums, theatres and other places of cultural interest, all of which will help you to adapt what you are learning to everyday situations, at the same time as exploring Buenos Aires.
There is usually a maximum of 14 students per class with two teachers. The courses can be taken at all levels from beginner to advanced and is an intensive, one month course.

INTENSIVE COURSE:
This is a one-month intensive course of 15 hours of lessons per week. You'll attend three hours of classes a day and all classes are in the afternoon. This course covers a total of 60 hours tuition over one month. If you are doing Intensive lessons at the same time as another placement, you'll have quite a busy schedule. This course starts at the beginning of each month - please contact us for exact dates as you will need to arrive a day or two before hand in order to be enrolled.

Travellers will liaise with you regarding which level of course you should take and will make all arrangements accordingly. Spanish lessons at the University are certificated. You will attend lectures at the University which is in walking distance of your accommodation.

If you want to pack in a lot of learning instead of having a relaxed placement, we can combine your University course with additional lessons from Spanish teachers. Your schedule for all of the courses given above will allow time for studying and also time for sightseeing and absorbing the experience of being in the Argentina culture.

HOSTEL ACCOMMODATION

You'll live a hostel situated in a beautifully renovated historic building in Downtown Buenos Aires, very conveniently located for exploring the city, with an endless supply of cafes, restaurants and shops nearby. It has a socialble atmosphere and you'll be made to feel welcome with a real chance to immerse yourself in Argentine culture.

You'll share a dorm room and have access to kitchen facilities. The hostel has a common area where you can relax and watch TV or DVD’s and there is also a piano and a ping pong table! It also has Wi-Fi and a couple of computers and a small roof terrace with chairs to enjoy the sunshine.

FOOD:

You’ll be given an allowance for your meals (breakfast and dinner, lunch is excluded for projects in Buenos Aires). This arrangement is to give you the flexibility to sample the great Argentinean food. Right on the door step of the hostel there are many cafes and restaurants with great priced menus just waiting for you….the choice is yours!

HOST FAMILY ACCOMMODATION:

If you would prefer a more cultural experience, we can arrange for you to stay with a local Argentinean family. Host family accommodation gives you the opportunity to become more integrated in the local community and is ideal if you want to practice your Spanish (Basic/intermediate Spanish is required to stay with a Host Family). You'll have a comfortable private room and use of the kitchen. Breakfast and dinner is provided every day and you will usually share a typical Argentinean meal with your family.

Facilities in host families do vary, but you can express your preferences regarding the type of family that you stay with (for example, a family with or without children, pets, etc). If you stay in a host family you will be given contact details of other volunteers living in Buenos Aires so that you won't miss out on any socialising!

If you choose the host family option, there is an additional supplement.

LOCATION | SIGHTSEEING:

The romance of Argentina takes one's breath away. From the northern deserts to the southern Andean Cordillera, from Iguazú Falls to the magnificent desolation of Patagonia, Argentina's geography is varied and stunning. Argentina is geared up to thrill - from nights tango-ing in the chic quarter of Buenos Aires to gaucho riding in the grasslands of the Pampas.

Cosmopolitan Buenos Aires:
Buenos Aires is one of the most exciting cities in Latin America. Tango was born here, restaurants serve all manner of world cuisines, bars play the latest music, cafés spill on to the streets and nightclubs allow dancing throughout the night. This fabulous city is renowned for its sophistication and has a surprisingly European feel about it. BA is reminiscent of Paris and its tree-lined avenues and frequent plazas have a beguiling, faded elegance.

Downtown, the Plaza de Mayo is the traditional focus of activity. Nearby Avenida 9 de Julio is popularly known as the world's widest thoroughfare and, with its nine lanes of traffic, is truly a pedestrian's nightmare! Avenida Santa Fe is the most fashionable shopping area.

REVIEWS AND FEEDBACK:

BENJAMIN McLEOD
British
Spanish Language Course in Buenos Aires

After a month of lessons. I feel able to communicate effectively with locals and understand more than I can speak. This has allowed me to experience the culture of Latin America more keenly and broaden my horizons on the career front.
Can you describe a typical day?
Wake up at about ten. Have breakfast (croissants, coffee).
Spanish lesson 1pm-4pm.
Relax at hostel from 5 – 7 and do homework if necessary.
Go out to eat, drink or take in the city's nightlife from 8pm onwards.

Overall, a very enjoyable month where I achieved everything I wanted to do and more. I love the city!

My teacher, Rita, was wonderfully patient and thoughtful. Her examples and explanations were clear and I feel that my Spanish improved greatly when I was there. We read very interesting short stories and discussed relevant political and social issues. Even though my Spanish was somewhat limited, the content of our discussions was still very engaging. Rita directed our conversations in interesting directions, and I enjoyed not only the Spanish I was learning but also the thoughtful ideas we discussed.

I have no negative comments! I worked hard during the class to focus on the areas I wanted to improve. Though my homework wasn’t always 100% complete (oops!) I got a lot out of the lessons!

The salsa classes were great...especially the group classes because I got a chance to hang out with locals and dance.
The private Spanish classes are amazing... the teachers cater to exactly what you like to do and what you feel you need to work on. I feel like the classes have helped me tremendously, especially with my speaking, which is exactly what I wanted to improve the most.
Both placements were great!

TESSA JONES
British
Law Work Experience Internship in Buenos Aires
plus Spanish Language Course

I have had a good exposure to law and legal Spanish which has greatly improved my knowledge of how the law works in Argentina and what an Argentine lawyer does on a day-to-day basis.
My Spanish has definitely improved a great deal since I have been here. I express myself much more fluently and clearly now and I am much more confident when speaking to Argentines at work, in the family I live with and in social situations. It has been a really good experience to be independent and find my own way in a foreign country.
I have also really enjoyed working in a legal environment and improving my knowledge of how a law firm abroad works.
Finally I have loved getting to know a different people, a different culture and a very different country to what I have grown up with. I will definitely take away some great memories of Argentina.
I have been really impressed by Travellers. The placement has been really well organised, both in the build-up to my departure for Buenos Aires and during my stay here. I have really felt well looked after.
Can you describe a typical day? My day begins at 9:30 in the law firm. As the firm is quite a small firm in terms of staff, I am generally kept busy throughout the morning doing various tasks such as legal research, translations and administrative tasks for different people in the office.
I leave the office at 1:30, have a quick lunch and then head off to my Spanish lesson between 3 and 5. I am set homework for every lesson, usually a translation, a grammar exercise or a short essay, which I discuss with my teacher before moving on to read a newspaper article, a short story by an Argentine writer or an article about an aspect of Argentine history.
In the evenings and on the weekends I go out with some friends I have made while I have been here, explore the city or take a short trip to a nearby town.

SALLY BLAKE

Tango Dance Course in Buenos Aires
plus Spanish Language Course

Friendly, excellent Spanish teacher who tailored the course to my level and speed of learning. Nothing negative to say. Learning was fun. Thanks!! I can chat in Milongas and manage to live in Buenos Aires. I intend to continue my studies at home.
Which were the most useful and interesting topics, in your opinion? Which ones were not?
All were useful. In the final lesson we translated a Tango, including “lunfardo” (colloquial Tango vocabulary) which was brilliant. Great when we played games and did role playing.
How would you describe the studying material provided during the lessons?
It was interesting and very useful. Some material was excellent (e.g. real magazines, newspapers, games, maps, etc.).

JADE WESTCOTT
British
Tango Dance Course in Buenos Aires
plus Spanish Language Course

Learning about the Argentinean culture is probably the main experience, and of course, gaining knowledge of the Tango and Spanish.
In terms of living out here and doing the placement, I think that pretty much anybody would be suited. The city itself is very easy to get around and there is many things to do, so I think even a novice traveller should be able to cope here.

In regards to the Tango and Spanish, of course you need patience as you are learning something new (if indeed it is new to the person), but I cannot see if there would be any reason for it not to suit those that were wishing to undertake such a placement.

SEETA KALGHATGI
British
Spanish Language Course in Buenos Aires

I'm having a great time here ...it's really hot! Spanish lessons are going well, and Andrea, my teacher is really sweet. I'm finally getting to the stage where I can say some things, but I can understand quite a lot. I think that it's helpful that I learned here rather than at school or uni as I'm not finding the accent too difficult to understand. Other than that I've really been enjoying myself here.
The area we're staying in is proving rather tempting as there's so many posh shops and restaurants around... I'm trying to resist buying too much as I'll only have to lug it round with me for the next 6 months, (but it's just that bit too affordable)!
I've also been going out quite a lot, my lessons are really flexible so I don't have too many early starts which is great when tasting the nightlife. It's really nice to go out with porteños as they tend to take you to really cool places that you would have never found otherwise.
Simon, Lucy, Charlotte and I all went to Iguaçu falls at the weekend and we had a great time, we met up with a few other people some of whom have made their way to Buenos Aires and we're meeting with one of the girls tonight.
It's such a massive city, I think we're all getting a lot out of it but different stuff. I think because I have a bit more time on my hands during the day, I have got to know the area pretty well and have also met a lot of people, those travelling, as well as Argentineans. Hopefully I'll do a bit more touristy stuff before I leave.

SARAH PAYNE-BAADER

plus Spanish Language Course

My placement in Buenos Aires was absolutely the best I could have imagined. I chose to attend Salsa, Tango and Spanish classes for two weeks.
Although I arrived by myself I was introduced to other Traveller's volunteers and was put in a room with some of them and we immediately made friends. The ladies running the programs in BA were both the loveliest, most helpful people, they were always there to help us with anything that went wrong or just to go out for nice dinners!

Both my dance teachers picked me up at my hostel for my first salsa and tango lessons to go to the respective studios where my lessons would be held 3 times a week (one of which was a huge mirrored room in one of Buenos Aires' best salsa clubs, to my delight!). The teachers were all fantastic, patient, friendly and helpful about filling me in on everything about BA and I learnt incredible amounts in such a short time.

If I did it again I would do it exactly the same way except for twice as long!! A fantastic experience overall and one I will never forget!

PETE PHELPS
British
Spanish Language Course in Buenos Aires

The placement here is excellent, it’s so much fun. The best thing is that Buenos Aires is so big, and it's packed full of things to do. There's art, theatre, sport, music, dance, everything.
I was also lucky enough to get to do one hours conversation class once a week as well. This makes my week perfectly balanced, as I have 7.5 hrs of Spanish lessons and 1 hr conversational. So I have time to see the city and work.
The lessons for Spanish are excellent, there are only two students in the lesson, Alex and myself. This means that we get more attention and learn more quickly. All the staff are very knowledgeable and will be happy to explain or give us any advice…
