TANGO DANCE COURSES IN BUENOS AIRES

COURSE CONTENT AND DESCRIPTION

During your programme you'll have lessons with one of two private tango teachers who regularly teach in various places throughout Buenos Aires, including Le Catedral. Both teachers are very famous in Argentina. The lessons scheduled for you are:

• Ten private tango classes per week, each lasting one hour. These will usually be taken in the afternoons but there will be some flexibility, depending on your teacher’s schedule.
• You will get a chance to attend a Milonga. A Milonga is an open Tango party where all levels mix together. People from all over come to this weekly social event, where everyone dances together and continually change couple - all lots of fun!
• A Tango Show, where you'll have a free dance lesson prior to watching the history of the Tango through the years. Not to be missed.

If you would like to add more hours to your weekly schedule in order to give you a more intensive Tango Dance learning experience, we can do that for you. There will be a supplementary charge for the additional hours.
Your dance schedule will allow plenty of time for sightseeing and absorbing the experience of being in Argentina.

The elusive spirit of Argentina is present everywhere in Buenos Aires. The national dance, the Tango, is perhaps the best expression of that spirit - practiced in dance halls, parks, open plazas, and ballrooms, it is a dance of intimate separation and common rhythm, combining both an elegant reserve and an exuberant passion.

HOSTEL ACCOMMODATION

You'll live a hostel situated in a beautifully renovated historic building in Downtown Buenos Aires, very conveniently located for exploring the city, with an endless supply of cafes, restaurants and shops nearby. It has a socialble atmosphere and you'll be made to feel welcome with a real chance to immerse yourself in Argentine culture.

You'll share a dorm room and have access to kitchen facilities. The hostel has a common area where you can relax and watch TV or DVD’s and there is also a piano and a ping pong table! It also has Wi-Fi and a couple of computers and a small roof terrace with chairs to enjoy the sunshine.

FOOD:

You’ll be given an allowance for your meals (breakfast and dinner, lunch is excluded for projects in Buenos Aires). This arrangement is to give you the flexibility to sample the great Argentinean food. Right on the door step of the hostel there are many cafes and restaurants with great priced menus just waiting for you….the choice is yours!

HOST FAMILY ACCOMMODATION:

If you would prefer a more cultural experience, we can arrange for you to stay with a local Argentinean family. Host family accommodation gives you the opportunity to become more integrated in the local community and is ideal if you want to practice your Spanish (Basic/intermediate Spanish is required to stay with a Host Family). You'll have a comfortable private room and use of the kitchen. Breakfast and dinner is provided every day and you will usually share a typical Argentinean meal with your family.

Facilities in host families do vary, but you can express your preferences regarding the type of family that you stay with (for example, a family with or without children, pets, etc). If you stay in a host family you will be given contact details of other volunteers living in Buenos Aires so that you won't miss out on any socialising!

If you choose the host family option, there is an additional supplement.

WHAT HAPPENS WHEN YOU BOOK YOUR PLACEMENT?

Once you have applied for a placement, we'll contact you and send you our Welcome Pack. You'll also receive Log-on details and password for our Volunteer Extranet where you'll have access to all the documentation and information which we've put together to facilitate preparations for your adventure! Your Project Co-ordinator for your country will liaise with you throughout the arrangements process, as well as while you're on your placement and on your return home.

The documents you'll have access to also include a Country Factfile, Safety Guide and any manuals that may assist you on your particular programme (e.g. Teaching Guide, Sports Manuals, Enrichment Suggestions for Animal Care, etc.). We do all we can to make your stay one that you'll never forget. This is a truly awesome, elegant and beautiful country.

As with all our destinations, the culture and heritage is different to what you're used to ... which, although one of the most exciting aspects of travelling, should be borne in mind. Self-reliance and independence are highly appreciated in all our destinations and will help you to make the most of this wonderful opportunity!

LOCATION | SIGHTSEEING:

The romance of Argentina takes one's breath away. From the northern deserts to the southern Andean Cordillera, from Iguazú Falls to the magnificent desolation of Patagonia, Argentina's geography is varied and stunning. Argentina is geared up to thrill - from nights tango-ing in the chic quarter of Buenos Aires to gaucho riding in the grasslands of the Pampas.

Cosmopolitan Buenos Aires:
Buenos Aires is one of the most exciting cities in Latin America. Tango was born here, restaurants serve all manner of world cuisines, bars play the latest music, cafés spill on to the streets and nightclubs allow dancing throughout the night. This fabulous city is renowned for its sophistication and has a surprisingly European feel about it. BA is reminiscent of Paris and its tree-lined avenues and frequent plazas have a beguiling, faded elegance.

Downtown, the Plaza de Mayo is the traditional focus of activity. Nearby Avenida 9 de Julio is popularly known as the world's widest thoroughfare and, with its nine lanes of traffic, is truly a pedestrian's nightmare! Avenida Santa Fe is the most fashionable shopping area.

I'd been dancing 5 months in the UK when I did a one month Tango placement in Buenos Aires with you guys. I stayed on in Buenos Aires to dance and I ended up writing a guide book for tango travellers to Buenos Aires - took me about two years from start to finish, but I got there in the end! Learning about the Argentinean culture is probably the main experience, and of course, gaining knowledge of the Tango and Spanish.
In terms of living out here and doing the placement, I think that pretty much anybody would be suited. The city itself is very easy to get around and there is many things to do, so I think even a novice traveller should be able to cope here.

In regards to the Tango and Spanish, of course you need patience as you are learning something new (if indeed it is new to the person), but I cannot see if there would be any reason for it not to suit those that were wishing to undertake such a placement.

Tango Dance Course in Buenos Aires

I chose the Tango placement as something which would be a bit different, give me an opportunity to do something creative and give me an insight into the local culture. It certainly met all these aims, and most of all was a lot of fun.
I enjoy dancing as a past time, but I think anyone could have a go at this. The combination of the individual private lessons as well as one group lesson per week also worked well. I learnt things in different ways at the different classes, and it was good to meet up with local Argentineans at the group class.
All in all, I fully recommend the tango placement as very rewarding, creative and great fun. I found Melina and Adriana [Travellers staff] really nice and very approachable too!

My placement in Buenos Aires was absolutely the best I could have imagined. I chose to attend Salsa, Tango and Spanish classes for two weeks.
Although I arrived by myself I was introduced to other Traveller's volunteers and was put in a room with some of them and we immediately made friends. The ladies running the programs in BA were both the loveliest, most helpful people, they were always there to help us with anything that went wrong or just to go out for nice dinners!

Both my dance teachers picked me up at my hostel for my first salsa and tango lessons to go to the respective studios where my lessons would be held 3 times a week (one of which was a huge mirrored room in one of Buenos Aires' best salsa clubs, to my delight!). The teachers were all fantastic, patient, friendly and helpful about filling me in on everything about BA and I learnt incredible amounts in such a short time.

If I did it again I would do it exactly the same way except for twice as long!! A fantastic experience overall and one I will never forget!

I'm having a really good time and everyone here is so nice and helpful. Melina and Adriana are so cool. I've already had two tango lessons which were so much fun :-)
My Spanish lessons are going well too.
But as it comes to Argentinean lifestyle ... I need a bit more time to get used to it as I'm not used to eating so late or going out at 2am. Saying that, I must admit that I had fantastic weekend partying.
