JOURNALISM WORK EXPERIENCE INTERNSHIP AT A NEWSPAPER IN PERTH

WORK CONTENT AND DESCRIPTION

You’ll work in areas such as investigating, planning, possibly photography and writing. You will be given deadlines and be expected to meet them, so you will need to be the type of person who can think on your feet in this fast-pace working environment. If this is you, then you'll truly relish this experience!

You’ll undertake a number of tasks and generally be asked to help out in a number of areas, thus giving your placement wide variety. The roles you'll be given will depend on your ability as a journalist. The newspaper covers a broad range of subjects, from business, sport, news and local stories to many of the other features that can be found in most newspapers. It is unlikely that you will focus in just one specific area but a bit of everything. Roles that you may be assigned include:

• planning
• preparing
• investigating
• writing
• plus anything else that may be required at the time that you’re there. For example, at times you may be expected to take your own photos (if you’re good enough with a camera) or plan your own arrangements to do a story, including arranging your own transport to get to the story.

ABOUT THE NEWSPAPER:
The Newspaper is a privately owned and operated suburban newspaper in the Perth metropolitan area of Western Australia. The papers are free weeklies delivered to all homes and businesses in their respective areas. They have a higher penetration of household letter box deliveries than the opposition in the same area.

Perth Suburban Newspapers are independent of any national or multi-national media organisations; their editorial content is not influenced by any vested interests. The newspapers are owned and operated by West Australians who live and work in their circulation areas. They have their fingers on the pulse of local issues as they happen. They pride themselves on this independent approach rather than promoting a generic "look" based on style rather than content.
Because of this difference, they have very high, loyal readership within the distribution boundaries. This high loyal readership is delivered directly to advertisers in a credible environment.

REQUIREMENTS:
You should have some experience or a degree in Journalism. You must be driven and able to work with and on anything that comes along. Because of the size of the newspaper, this is a great opportunity for people who are serious about journalism, because you’ll learn a lot!!

ACCOMMODATION

Your accommodation is located in the CBD (Central Business District) of Perth, Western Australia. Therefore you are very central, close to the main train station and shopping district. You'll live in a centrally located lodge that is friendly and relaxing, making it ideal for long term stays. You'll most likely have your own room, but will share a bathroom with others on your floor. There is an excellent kitchen and storage area for cooking meals and plenty of space to relax.

Entertainment at the Lodge currently includes a pool table, cheap internet access, arcade machines and cable TV (Foxtel), to name a few, but with all the sunshine Perth has, you’ll be out and about enjoying the many outdoor activities! You are literally a stroll from the Swan River and free CBD transport. Trains and buses are also only a few minutes away to take you to Fremantle, King’s Park or to the many other things to do in the region!

The city centre boasts great shopping, restaurants and pubs or you can head over to Northbridge for more pubs, nightclubs and multicultural cuisine. You'll get to work via bus, which stops outside your accommodation.

FOOD:
Food is not included in this project so you should budget for meals. We feel that a good guide would be a weekly budget of around AUD$70-90.

INTERNSHIP LOCATION:
The community newspaper is based about 30 minutes from Perth Central Business District in an area called Fremantle. Fremantle is Western Australia's major commercial port and handles the majority of the State's imports and exports. It is a major tourist attraction for travellers from all parts of the world and attracts large numbers of residents and visitors on a daily basis. The city offers a unique blend of a lively multicultural yet relaxed lifestyle and is a 7-day city.

Within easy walking and cycling distance, visitors can experience contemporary circus, fine crafts, original music and theatre, exciting galleries, museums, bookshops and buskers. Along with maritime history and extensive architectural conservation, the Arts have become a central part of Fremantle life where visitors can discover the past and present.

WHAT HAPPENS WHEN YOU BOOK YOUR PLACEMENT?

Once you have applied for a placement, we'll contact you and send you our Welcome Pack. You'll also receive Log-on details and password for our Volunteer Extranet where you'll have access to all the documentation and information which we've put together to facilitate preparations for your adventure! Your Project Co-ordinator for your country will liaise with you throughout the arrangements process, as well as while you're on your placement and on your return home.

The documents you'll have access to also include a Country Factfile, Safety Guide and any manuals that may assist you on your particular programme (e.g. Teaching Guide, Sports Manuals, Enrichment Suggestions for Animal Care, etc.). We do all we can to make your stay one that you'll never forget. This is a truly awesome, elegant and beautiful country.

As with all our destinations, the culture and heritage is different to what you're used to ... which, although one of the most exciting aspects of travelling, should be borne in mind. Self-reliance and independence are highly appreciated in all our destinations and will help you to make the most of this wonderful opportunity!

LOCATION | SIGHTSEEING:

Try to see some of the country while you're there. It's big (huge!) and each different region is exciting and very, very beautiful. Our great location is in Perth, a city rich in culture and filled with theatres, art galleries and museums. The city is modern and vibrant - a fun, friendly and 'laid back' place, with clear skies and a sunny climate. Western Australia is locally known as the 'state of excitement!'

Some of its more famous attractions include Kings Park, Scarborough Beach, Fremantle and the Swan River. Fremantle (or as the local’s call it, ‘Freo’) is the city’s port and is rich in history. At weekends you will find markets, entertainment and plenty of alfresco style cafes to laze in. Perth has restaurants to suit all tastes - the most popular cuisine is of course the great Australian BBQ. Barbeque facilities are abundant in local parks - take your own food and cook up a feast, Australian style!

• Fremantle - Spend a few days in Fremantle is an absolute must. Just a 30 minute drive from Perth's city centre. Freo, as it's known by locals is a vibrant port city you can't miss.
• Rottnest Island - Just offshore from Perth, Rottnest Island is where the locals go to swim at white-sand beaches, snorkel in turquoise water over shipwrecks, or kick back and go fishing. Rotto, as it's called locally, is a car-free zone, which adds to its relaxed feel.
• Margaret River - No trip to Western Australia is complete without a pit stop at Margaret River. Originally a chilled out surfie town, Margaret River has evolved into the ultimate smorgasbord of good food, fine wine and spectacular scenery - just a three-and-a-half hour drive south of Perth.
• Albany - Prepare to be blown away by Albany's dramatic convict history, set against a backdrop of rugged granite coastline, green seas and a wild beauty that tugs at the heartstrings. Step back in time and explore convict jails, old taverns, whaling ships and settlers' cottages and grand National Trust homes in beautifully landscaped grounds.
• Denmark - where towering tall trees meet the ocean. A relaxed village atmosphere, romantic timber milling history and incredible coastal scenery.
• Ningaloo Reef - Take a dive with hundreds of tropical fish, amazing coral formations and the world's biggest fish, the whale shark.
• Monkey Mia - Monkey Mia is one of Western Australia's most famous dolphin watching destinations.
• Shark Bay - The Shark Bay World Heritage Area was Western Australia's first World Heritage Listed site. Shark Bay's wilderness and natural wonders make for a unique holiday.
• The Pinnacles - The extraordinary ancient rock formations are located about a three-hour drive north of Perth near the coastal town of Cervantes.
• Kalgoorlie - Western Australia's largest goldfields town famed for its fascinating gold rush history, fabulous old buildings and old gold miners' ghost towns.
• Esperance - For squeaky-white beaches, getting off the beaten track and bunking down under the stars. This place is so relaxed even the kangaroos sun bake on the beach!
• Bunbury - just two hours drive south of Perth, it is located on a spectacular peninsular surrounded by blue waters of the Indian Ocean, Koombana Bay and the Leschenault Inlet.

I chose journalism as my career when I was twelve, too young to know the meaning of career, people normally say. I had a great passion for writing and broadcasting all the while, and my ultimate aim is to work for an international newspaper.

My placement has given me the taste of being a professional journalist in a different country. I had a great editor in chief and the staff was always ready to offer a helping hand. After 4 weeks I just fell in love with my job and Australia; it was so hard for me to leave.

I'm definitely more confident in my writing skills and to see my work printed in a foreign newspaper meant the world to me. Now I know I have made the right choice to become a journalist.

Thanks to Travellers, and I'm definitely looking forward to joining them for another placement soon.

Journalism Work Experience Internship in Perth

Having completed work experience with newspapers before, as a young journalist I jumped at the chance to spend a month with an Australian newspaper during my gap year. Not only was I able to research and write stories in and around Fremantle, I was given the opportunity to interview local traders, review properties and even become a restaurant critic!

The experience of living away from home for the first time coupled with the pressure of work made this the most challenging month of my life to date. However I will treasure every minute - I've been able to learn and develop my skills as a journalist whilst looking after myself thousands of miles away from home! I've also had the chance to forge friendships which can continue back in England.

What started as an optimistic search on Google when planning an impromptu gap year became an invaluable experience - I'm so grateful to Travellers for the opportunity!

September – Update from James Restall
Hope you're well. Just thought I'd let you know I've been shortlisted for Reporter of the Year at the Guardian Student Media Awards, the top accolade in English student journalism. I'm up against 4 students from other universities and I find out if I've won on November 27.

I want to thank you and the Newspaper because you gave me my first taste of investigative journalism, and the skills I learned in Freo have given me the best possible start to my career.
