WORK CONTENT AND DESCRIPTION

You'll work in many local schools in Ubud Area including a local school which is taken care of by the Indonesian government. The Government only supports a teacher for one class of English lessons a week, so your input is very useful for the children. Schools in Bali are often in poor physical condition with classrooms unusable because of leaking roofs and broken furnishings.

Our Project Aims:

  • To encourage and inspire these children into future education.
  • To ensure each child is confident and articulate in both spoken and written English.
  • To teach games & songs.
  • To encourage the kids in learning through fun.
  • To come up with creative methods of teaching.
  • To make effective Lesson plans.

Young people in Bali thirst for education. Even though the Primary school is free, the parents have to take care of the books and the uniform. Most of the parents are farmers and can’t afford the finances of high school for their children. This is a very rewarding experience for you and the children are really happy to be able to learn from you.

You'll have the opportunity to teach at the local school (3 hours) or a Project-run Teaching Centre (3 hours) for high school groups. You can can teach a variety of English Based subjects, games, songs, art, sport, music etc., helping the children to learn through fun. You'll be able to teach whole classes on your own or together with other volunteers. And you'll be able to prepare your own English lessons.

We particularly welcome those for whom this is their first visit to Bali. We help with cultural awareness and immersion learning during your training, as well as assisting you to tour Bali through short activity breaks during your weekends and vacations. Volunteering work and intercultural travel share a common trait: the more you put into it, the more you get out of it. This program is designed for proactive individuals and groups. Naturally, the Scheduling and activities of our program are subject to change. At times, alterations in activities are due to changes in local conditions. This is part of what makes overseas programs the interesting adventure and incredible learning experience that it is.

WHAT HAPPENS WHEN YOU BOOK YOUR PLACEMENT?

Once you have applied for a placement, we'll contact you and send you our Welcome Pack. You'll also receive Log-on details and password for our Volunteer Extranet where you'll have access to all the documentation and information which we've put together to facilitate preparations for your adventure! Your Project Co-ordinator for your country will liaise with you throughout the arrangements process, as well as while you're on your placement and on your return home.

The documents you'll have access to also include a Country Factfile, Safety Guide and any manuals that may assist you on your particular programme (e.g. Teaching Guide, Sports Manuals, Enrichment Suggestions for Animal Care, etc.). We do all we can to make your stay one that you'll never forget. This is a truly awesome, elegant and beautiful country.

TRAVELLERS' SUPPORT AND BACKUP: Read about the excellent Support & Backup we provide before you leave and during your programme.

On Arrival, your Introduction to the Country: When you arrive you will be welcomed by a member of the team who will take you to your accommodation and introduce you to everyone.

CLIMATE, CULTURE AND COSTUME:
You can expect pleasant day temperatures between 20 to 33 degrees Celsius or 68 to 93 degrees Fahrenheit year-round. From December to March, the West monsoon can bring heavy showers and high humidity, but usually days are sunny and the rains start during the night and pass quickly. From June to September the humidity is low, and it can be quite cool in the evenings. During this time of the year, you'll have hardly any rain in the coastal areas. That said, Ubud is in the mountains and has a unique microclimate where you can expect cloudy skies and showers throughout the year. Sometimes you’ll even need a sweater or light jacket after the sun sets!

Bali is a Hindu Island, Balinese Culture and Balinese Traditional are still charming and beautiful. Traditional Balinese clothing worn by women covers their shoulders and knees. Especially, when they go to the temple and when they have a Ceremony Day.

REQUIREMENTS AND NOTES:
Indonesia is still a developing country thus the living standard falls short of what we are used to in the West. The Balinese culture and heritage is totally different to Western cultures. However, the people are very friendly and will help you all they can, and, of course, you will be well looked after during your placement!

Our projects in Bali are worthwhile and lots of fun, and you're sure to have a wonderful time during your stay - your adventure has begun :-)
