WORK CONTENT AND DESCRIPTION

The Centre you'll assist fulfils the role of a base for the local children to attend during non-school hours. This encourages further education and social interaction. It also provides what is often their main meal of the day. The Centre is a means of keeping the children off the streets once they leave school for the day and also eliminates negative influences.

There is an average of 40 children attending the project, which is run by 2 people, a cook and a teacher. Any help you can provide is very gratefully received! The activities and lessons developed in the Centre are always planned over a specific topic. For example: Today the subject is “Italy”, this means that the children will study and develop all kinds of activities relating to Italy. This includes history, geography, singing, food, movies and anything you can possible imagine about the country.

You are encouraged to either take part in planning these Projects, or you can bring your own Project to work with the kids during your placement period. For example, if you are British, you can develop a Project about England to work on with the children. You have the freedom to create any activities and lessons relating to your home. These could include ...

  • Cooking,
  • Music (play an instrument with the children), sing English or foreign songs ...
  • Prepare a dance presentation
  • Sports (you could do an intensive rugby course, or any other sports associated with Britain, USA, or your home country)
  • Any activity that can bring a taste and understanding of your own culture to the children is encouraged!

The children’s English level is very basic, considering they have very basic English lessons in regular school. The idea is to offer to them the opportunity of an intensive English course, which can only be done with your help. They benefit enormously from the experience of having a native speaker working together with them!

Because these types of lessons are unusual and also not mandatory, the children are hugely enthusiastic to take part. You can feel and gauge their energy and enthusiasm levels, and you can change the activity whenever you feel their interest is not 100% anymore. The institution is used to receiving foreign volunteers (they have recently received volunteers from China and Mexico and the children loved them!) and the coordinator is more than happy to help you to prepare activities to be developed with the children.

The Centre is open from 8.00 a.m. to 5.00 p.m. and runs in two shifts: from 8.00 to 11:30 a.m. and from 13:30 to 17:00 p.m. During the mornings the Centre receives around 15 children, and in the afternoon another 25 students join in. You can choose to do just the morning or the afternoon shifts, or you can do both shifts, the flexibility and options are yours.

HOLIDAYS AND CARNAVAL!
There are times when the crèche is closed due to holidays and festivals. Please see below:
• Summer Holiday: 12th December 2015 to 10th January 2016
• Winter Holiday: 18th July 2016 – 1st August 2016

Carnaval begins at midnight on the Friday before Ash Wednesday (usually around the second week of February) and last for five days, but the whole country stops for about two weeks. Carnaval is celebrated all over Brazil. The most famous is, of course, held in Rio, but the authentic versions of Carnaval are found outside of Rio.

The dates for 2016 are 5th to 10th February.

CAN'T SPEAK THE LANGUAGE?
If you speak some Portuguese (or even Spanish), you will find it very beneficial on this project. But don't be put off if languages aren't your thing! You're sure to pick up some of the basic words whilst you are there, and will find other ways to converse without language becoming a barrier. Don't forget that we can also arrange some Portuguese Lessons for you during your programme if you'd like.

ACCOMMODATION

Step into the amazing cultural of Florianópolis by living with one of our local host families. A home away from home and an authentic integration into the local culture. You'll be much more than just a “tourist” and the added benefits are that often our host families introduce you to their families and friends ... which often results in invitations to many local events such as football matches, cinema, a drink in a local bar, birthday parties, family meals, a ride to the beach, etc.

You may have your own room, but depending on the number of volunteers there at the time, it's possible that you'll share your room.

FOOD:
At your accommodation you will be provided with breakfast. This usually consists of coffee, milk, bread and butter, cheese and fruits, setting you up for the day ahead. You will need to budget for your lunch and dinner, but with an array of shops, supermarkets and restaurants nearby, you'll have a lot of choice for eating out.

You can also choose to buy ingredients and prepare your own home-cooked meals at the host family. There are all the usual facilities to do this.

LOCATION | SIGHTSEEING:

Florianópolis, or Floripa as it's known, is the capital city of Santa Catarina in southern Brazil. It is composed of one main island, Ilha de Santa Catarina, and a number of surrounding small islands. Floripa is a natural treasure with truly exceptional sights, like beautiful lagoons, stunning beaches, rolling mountains lush with Atlantic rainforest, soft white dunes and an array of small offshore islands.

Floripa has something for everyone, from authentic and rustic fishing villages to surfer's paradises, high-end Brazilian summer getaways, pristine and untouched nature reserves just minutes away from modern shopping malls and cinema complexes. Its numerous white and clean sand bottom beaches attract visitors from around the world as well as holidaying Brazilians.

There are lots of fun activities, like surfing, windsurfing, paragliding, snorkelling, diving, boat tours, jiu-jitsu, hiking, whale-watching and many other ecotourism options. Florianópolis is also blessed with some of the most breathtaking beaches in the world, 42 beaches in total and has a wonderful sub-tropical climate, with average temperature between 70ºF and 90ºF, perfect for the beach!

  • Lagoa da Conceição, which has several of the island's most beautiful beaches, including Joaquina, a Brazilian temple of surf and stage with immense sand dunes. It's also home to the world-wide surfing championships.
  • Praia Mole, another paradise of surfers and sun worshippers and a favourite of the island's young, athletic and beautiful!
  • Barra da Lagoa, which concentrates the biggest fishing colony of the Island of Santa Catarina and is popular with backpackers.
  • Praia da Galheta, a jaw-dropping coastal nature preserve completely virgin in its natural state, with a soft white sand beach, clear waters and surrounded by lush green hills.
  • Pantano do Sul beach, known for typical seafood restaurants and local fishing boats that make the passage to the beautiful offshore island Ilha do Campeche; and Ribeirão da Ilha, an historic district and one of the rustic fishing villages of Florianópolis.
  • Further north along the eastern coast is Moçambique, the island's longest beach and completely virgin, also a nature preserve, and Santinho beach, a more populated region offering good tourism infrastructure.
  • In the southern stretch of the eastern coast, Matadeiro beach is a great option for surfing and Morro das Pedras has an agitated sea and a unique rock formation advancing into the sea.

CARNAVAL!
Like Mardi Gras, Carnaval has its roots in ancient pagan ritual. The wild parties began in the Middle Ages. Over time it flourished and incorporated extravagant costumes from India and primitive carnal beats from African rhythm. Carnaval takes place before Lent where Catholic Brazilians officially gave up luxuries such as meat, alcohol and pastries.

The excitement of Carnaval builds practically all year round. Rehearsals at samba schools begin in August and marching percussion bands practise for their performances of music throughout the year. Carnaval Balls are extreme, surreal and erotic events. There is various stages of undress, extravagant body painting, stickered tattoos, fishnets and spandex involved! Hypnotic music, grinding movements and beautiful ladies of the night vying for the camera’s attention are included in the price of the ticket. Some of these beautiful ladies are less ‘lady’ than they may appear…

Street Carnaval is all about the dancing in the streets, marching bands pump out their theme tune and other rhythms as the drag queens and party crazed people bop along behind. The samba parades are perhaps a highlight of carnaval. As the Lonely Planet so nicely puts it, the Brazilians harness sweat, noise and confusion and turn it into art. The best Samba schools in the country prepare all year for their moment of glory. This procession is a competition of the art. There are many aspects to samba including percussion, song, dance, choreography, costumes, story line, floats and decorations. The winner of the samba parades earns admiration and the pride of Rio and all of Brazil.

REVIEWS AND FEEDBACK:

LUDVIK SOLNOR
Norwegian
(1) Portuguese Language Course and
(2) Teaching English Project at the Orphanage in Florianopolis, Brazil

After finishing high school in Norway, I decided that I wanted some time off from the Norwegian everyday life and experience something new and exotic. After having corresponded with Travellers for some time, I decided to go to Brazil and to teach English at an orphanage.

After having spent some weeks in Florianópolis I got more comfortable with Portuguese and the local customs and culture. It was now time to start doing what I really came to do - to teach English.

The beginning was both rough and difficult, but after having gotten over those initial barriers I grew into it and enjoyed it a lot. Standing in a classroom in Brazil trying to communicate with twenty five kids of six years of age staring you up and down and not being able to communicate verbally with each other, was probably the hardest challenge in my life yet!

But it’s amazing how fast you adapt and overcome big challenges if you just want to. I taught at the orphange for three months and when I was finished I was both relieved and sad. Spending that much time with the kids, I had started to care for them and enjoy their company, however, I was also ready to start my other job in Brazil.

In the first weeks in Brazil I was approached by a scout of a model agency and it turned out that they were quite interested in representing me if I was cut out for the business. I agreed to try it and not having any expectations I was blown away when Ford Models actually said that I was now represented by them. The only problem was that my visa and flight ticket were putting an end to my stay, and this just after I had gotten my big deal with Ford!

After much research and a trip to Argentina (to extend my visa) I was allowed to stay for an additional three months. So I found an apartment (right on the beach!) and I started what would turn out to be a very long vacation! I did some jobs with the agency at a fashion show and made some much needed money to fund my extra three months. All in all, I had a wonderful stay in Brazil and I left with an enriched set of friends, life purpose, language skills and confidence. I highly recommend spending time in this crazy, weird, wonderful, majestic country where you might have your dreams come true!

As for the aftermath of my journey I realized much about myself. I, mentally, grew a lot and I became more confident in what I really desire in life. That being said, I’m sure I’m not going to become a teacher nor a proffesional model, however I have a pretty good idea of what I do want to do. To all fellow volunteers and soon-to-become volunteers, I wish you a good trip and enjoy, cherish and seize every opportunity you stumble over as they may leave a big influence on your life.

Obrigado, divirte-se no Brasil!
