WORK CONTENT AND DESCRIPTION

The Centre offers English courses to children, teenagers and adults. The classes are given by international English speaking volunteers. Students are not charged for these classes and, although there is strong demand amongst local residents, class sizes are restricted to 15-20 students per class. Students attend daily classes in the afternoons and evenings, depending on their age and skill level. The curriculum focuses on the natural habitat of the Galapagos Islands, emphasizing conversation, creativity and interactive exercises over grammatical structures and memorisation. Occasionally, audiovisuals such as movies are utilised, and students are also asked to interview tourists to hone their skills. The results have been very positive from a language standpoint, and, more importantly, many students seem to have adopted a more open attitude and awareness for conservation and environmental education.

ABOUT THE PROJECT:
You'll mainly teach English to the students at the centre. The program follows a set course and all students have their own books. However, volunteers are also welcome to offer their own ideas and use their own initiative to make their classes as interesting and educational as possible.

As the English classes take place in the afternoons and evenings, volunteers are offered the opportunity to also help out in the local INFA nursery (a local equivalent of family services for more vulnerable children onthe island) in the mornings - helping, caring, entertaining and playing with the babies and toddlers. You may also be asked occasionally to help out with painting or decorating the classrooms, helping out at local schools and colleges or any other activities that benefit the local community.

WORKING HOURS:
Your work schedules will depend on how many other volunteers are working in the project at the same time as you, as well as on their motivation and flexibility. You can choose which age range and level of students you would like to work with or you could help out in all of the classes. There are generally one or two volunteers per class.

English classes run from Monday to Thursday, each class lasts 1 hour:
3:00 to 5:00 pm younger children
5:00 to 7:00 pm teenagers
7:00 to 9:00 pm adults

On Friday afternoons no regular classes are held, but the children may come to watch films or participate in special activities. For those volunteers involved with environmental education or art activities, these activities usually take place on Friday afternoons too.

Though volunteer schedules vary depending on the area of work that they are assigned, most volunteers work approximately 20-25 hours per week. For example, English teachers typically provide 4 hours of classroom instruction daily (Monday-Friday), not including lesson plans and general classroom preparation. You have your weekends free to travel and explore the Galapagos Islands.

SCHOOL HOLIDAYS:
The educational program runs parallel to the school year, which runs from April - January in the Galapagos Islands. Classes finish for Summer holidays in mid-January and a Summer camp program is held for 4-5 weeks for younger children, from February to mid-March.

SPANISH LESSONS:
If you have no previous knowledge of Spanish, you can include 1 or 2 weeks of Spanish lessons at a well-established Spanish school in Quito, prior to travelling to the Galapagos Islands. All the teachers at the school have taught Spanish for 8 or more years and between them they have developed a great many resources to make the lessons lively and fun. They also periodically organise interesting and enjoyable activities in order to introduce the Ecuadorian and Latin culture to their students - most recently they've been cooking Ecuadorian dishes in classes! It's a great, fun way to learn!

ACCOMMODATION

You will most likely fly into Quito in Ecuador where you will be met by a member of staff and have an induction and an overnight stop-off here. Your volunteer work will start on Monday; however, you will fly from Quito to San Cristobal during the weekend. Your return flight from Quito – Galapagos Islands is included in your project price! You'll be met at the airport by the project director and taken to the accommodation and settled in before your induction.

During your stay on San Cristobal, you will stay with a host family in the town of Puerto Baquerizo Moreno. You will stay in a family’s house and will be provided with a space in the kitchen to store your food and cook your meals. Puerto Baquerizo Morena is a small town and all of the families are located within the 15/20 minute walk from the project. The nearest beach is a short walk from the accommodation.

FOOD:
Food is not included on this project. In the host families you can make use of the kitchen and you can cook for yourself. If you don’t fancy cooking for yourself all the time, there’s plenty of opportunity to eat out.

Although the majority of food and drinks must be transported from the mainland, there are still economic ways to eat. At lunch time, many restaurants offer ‘almuerzo’ (soup and a main dish) and there are several restaurants in the vicinity.

ABOUT EDUCATION IN THE GALAPAGOS ISLANDS
This project works with the people of San Cristobal, in the Galapagos Islands, to develop environmental education through community programs. Volunteers can make a real difference to the local community and contribute to the long term conservation of the islands. The project began in 1996 through a partnership of local Galapagos residents and English speaking volunteers in order to address the social and ecological challenges facing conservation in the Galapagos Islands and the surrounding Marine Reserve. In the year 2000, after several years of 'unofficial work', they gained recognition as a legal, non-profit-making charity committed to providing a more inclusive and therefore effective conservation program for the Galapagos Islands. The aim is to achieve this through a program of education, which can ultimately provide the necessary skills, knowledge and awareness to the most influential species in the Galapagos; humans.

Learning a foreign language (English) for a Galapagos resident provides countless personal, social and economic opportunities. Not only does it help locals better serve the tourists that visit Galapagos each year; it provides a new, sustainable alternative to fishing and allows for a mutual sharing of perspectives as contact between visitor and resident are made possible. More importantly, English skills are not limited to tourism, but include areas such as scientific research, education and many others.

LOCATION | SIGHTSEEING:

LOCATION:
You’ll be based on the island of San Cristobal, which is about a 2 hour flight from the Ecuadorian mainland. It is the 5th largest of the Galapagos Islands and its’ primary industries are fishing, tourism and arable farming. The town has restaurants, shops and hotels. It is also fast-becoming a surfing hotspot, with a good beach just a short walk from the volunteer accommodation.

GALÁPAGOS ISLANDS:
The Galápagos islands lie some 600 miles from the coastline of Ecuador. Formed by volcanic eruptions into the sea, they contain species found nowhere else on the planet and are one of the most significant sites in the world; most notably because this is where Charles Darwin's theories of evolution were inspired and shaped. This rocky and at first glance inhospitable terrain is home to giant tortoise, swimming iguanas and fearless blue footed boobies.

The marine reserve here is equally impressive, boasting encounters for divers and snorkellers with penguins, marine turtles, manta rays and sea lions, amongst others. Around 90% of the islands are protected areas, with visitor numbers restricted and some sites off limits altogether to ensure conservation.

QUITO:
Ecuador's capital, Quito, lies in the north of the country, some 15 miles from the equator and with the Andean Mountains and valleys as a backdrop. It's 10,000ft altitude keeps it cool, with spring like temperatures year round. It was declared a UNESCO world heritage site in the 1970's for its preserved historic Latin quarter. The city also contains a thriving 'new town' popular with younger generations for its restaurants, shopping and nightlife. There are lots of restaurants and "Patio de Comidas" where you can pick up an excellent value lunch or dinner.

THE AMAZON:
The Amazon is the worlds largest remaining tropical rainforest, occupying about one third of Ecuador. To get some idea of its scale, first you need to know that Ecuador's share of the Amazon represents just 2% of the whole rainforest; most of it belonging to Brazil (60%) followed by Peru (13%). Important nevertheless as the Amazon in Ecuador remains relatively untouched, has good infrastructure to make for easy visitation and is home to numerous indigenous settlements which welcome outsiders.

THE ANDES:
One of the greatest mountain ranges in the world, they split Ecuador in two running from the north of the country down. Indigenous communities have cultivated the land in the Andean Highlands for thousands of years, selling their produce in bustling market towns. Catch a glimpse of the abundantly colourful markets, showcasing traditions of ancient civilizations and Inca descendants.

Mountaineers will love the peaks of the 'Avenue of Volcanoes' an area in the central highlands with a number of active volcanoes. Whilst each climb is different and most are incredibly challenging, the rewards along the way are numerous. Dense forest, waterfalls and spectacular views across the valleys below await the intrepid few. Other hot pursuits in this region include walking, rafting, biking or camping.

PACIFIC COASTLINE:
This 2000km coast is fringed with pristine sand beaches, sweeping bays, mangrove forests, crashing waves and tranquil fishing villages. The ports and fishing villages are an important part of Ecuador's economy, delivering fresh sea food and imported goods. At certain times of the year you can see Humpback whales arriving from Antarctic waters to mate; splashing their fins and exhaling gushes of water. Marine birds are also in abundance along the pacific coastline, with sightings of the albatross, one of natures largest birds, being common.
