RADIO WORK EXPERIENCE INTERNSHIP ON A COMMUNITY RADIO STATION IN PERTH

WORK CONTENT AND DESCRIPTION

You'll assist in putting together programmes for airing and also get involved in production, script-writing, station management, and much more. You'll contribute both on and off the airwaves and assist in many areas, from producing and announcing to audio production, administration, programming, event organising, fundraising, sponsorship and maintenance. Here is a breakdown of the job roles that you may be assigned:

Don’t worry if you’re not sure where to start, the stations will guide you through the exciting world of radio and fully train you for your role within the organisation!

The days do vary a lot depending on where I’m needed. At the moment, I’m on reception on Mondays and Wednesday, in the News Room on Tuesdays and Friday, and Thursday I’m everywhere! (Reception, production, news room, sitting in on one of the announcers shows, marketing).

Most of your time is likely to be spent working alongside one of the main staff members or long-term volunteers, helping to put together a programme to go on air. This involves reviewing and selecting, as well as helping with the research, putting the programme together and interviewing people. It may even extend to actually broadcasting the material.
Some programmes may be long and others may be very short, but even a short programme of only five minutes in length, with four segments, can take a week to put together, so you're likely to be kept very busy! Most of the work is done inside the studios with very little work taking place outside.

The equipment you'll use will depend on your own interests and skills, but will more than likely comprise general office computers, recording software, recording devices, and possibly one of the studio panels if they think you're able to assist in creating programmes or segments.

Depending on the duration of your project, you may be able to fill in on a few live on-air shifts, but it is more than likely that you'll assist with work on the pre-recorded segments and also assist the current announcer.

Working overseas is a challenging yet wonderfully rewarding experience and this placement will give you excellent hands-on broadcasting and production experience. Whether you're starting out or taking a career break, this placement will broaden your horizons and give you experience of a new way of working in a different yet exciting culture where language is not a problem and the people are particularly friendly and welcoming.

REQUIREMENTS:

• You don't need any qualifications to do this placement.
• You need to have an interest in media and prepared to be flexible with the work.
• You must be able to work with, and get on with, other people, particularly bearing in mind that the station is run almost entirely by volunteers from the community.
• If your placement is for a shorter-term, it's unlikely that you'll be given your own programmes, but if you're there longer-term, this may well be a possibility, depending on your own capabilities.
• We will ask you to submit a voice recording or demo tape, but this is only so that the project can judge whether you will be able to broadcast on air. It will not affect your ability to assist in all the other areas of radio broadcasting.
• Lastly, self-reliance and independence will help you make the most of this wonderful opportunity!

ACCOMMODATION

Your accommodation is located in the CBD (Central Business District) of Perth, Western Australia. Therefore you are very central, close to the main train station and shopping district. You'll live in a centrally located lodge that is friendly and relaxing, making it ideal for long term stays. You'll most likely have your own room, but will share a bathroom with others on your floor. There is an excellent kitchen and storage area for cooking meals and plenty of space to relax.

Entertainment at the Lodge currently includes a pool table, cheap internet access, arcade machines and cable TV (Foxtel), to name a few, but with all the sunshine Perth has, you’ll be out and about enjoying the many outdoor activities! You are literally a stroll from the Swan River and free CBD transport. Trains and buses are also only a few minutes away to take you to Fremantle, King’s Park or to the many other things to do in the region!

The city centre boasts great shopping, restaurants and pubs or you can head over to Northbridge for more pubs, nightclubs and multicultural cuisine. You'll get to work via bus, which stops outside your accommodation.

FOOD:
Food is not included in this project so you should budget for meals. We feel that a good guide would be a weekly budget of around AUD$70-90.

The Radio stations are located in the suburbs of Perth. Perth was built on the banks of the magnificent Swan River over 150 years ago and is now a city rich in culture and filled with theatres, art galleries and museums. The city is modern and vibrant - a fun, friendly and 'laid back' place, with clear skies and a sunny climate. Western Australia is locally known as the 'state of excitement!'

How the Radio Station benefits from volunteers:
The people at the radio station are looking forward having interns from outside Australia who may be able to contribute new ideas. They are very open to free-thinking, innovative ideas! The more effort you put in, the more the responsibility you'll get. This is an excellent project that will give you good grounding and good experience.

WHAT HAPPENS WHEN YOU BOOK YOUR PLACEMENT?

Once you have applied for a placement, we'll contact you and send you our Welcome Pack. You'll also receive Log-on details and password for our Volunteer Extranet where you'll have access to all the documentation and information which we've put together to facilitate preparations for your adventure! Your Project Co-ordinator for your country will liaise with you throughout the arrangements process, as well as while you're on your placement and on your return home.

The documents you'll have access to also include a Country Factfile, Safety Guide and any manuals that may assist you on your particular programme (e.g. Teaching Guide, Sports Manuals, Enrichment Suggestions for Animal Care, etc.). We do all we can to make your stay one that you'll never forget. This is a truly awesome, elegant and beautiful country.

As with all our destinations, the culture and heritage is different to what you're used to ... which, although one of the most exciting aspects of travelling, should be borne in mind. Self-reliance and independence are highly appreciated in all our destinations and will help you to make the most of this wonderful opportunity!

LOCATION | SIGHTSEEING:

Try to see some of the country while you're there. It's big (huge!) and each different region is exciting and very, very beautiful. Our great location is in Perth, a city rich in culture and filled with theatres, art galleries and museums. Some of its more famous attractions include Kings Park, Scarborough Beach, Fremantle and the Swan River. Fremantle (or as the local’s call it, ‘Freo’) is the city’s port and is rich in history. At weekends you will find markets, entertainment and plenty of alfresco style cafes to laze in. Perth has restaurants to suit all tastes - the most popular cuisine is of course the great Australian BBQ. Barbeque facilities are abundant in local parks - take your own food and cook up a feast, Australian style!

• Fremantle - Spend a few days in Fremantle is an absolute must. Just a 30 minute drive from Perth's city centre. Freo, as it's known by locals is a vibrant port city you can't miss.
• Rottnest Island - Just offshore from Perth, Rottnest Island is where the locals go to swim at white-sand beaches, snorkel in turquoise water over shipwrecks, or kick back and go fishing. Rotto, as it's called locally, is a car-free zone, which adds to its relaxed feel.
• Margaret River - No trip to Western Australia is complete without a pit stop at Margaret River. Originally a chilled out surfie town, Margaret River has evolved into the ultimate smorgasbord of good food, fine wine and spectacular scenery - just a three-and-a-half hour drive south of Perth.
• Albany - Prepare to be blown away by Albany's dramatic convict history, set against a backdrop of rugged granite coastline, green seas and a wild beauty that tugs at the heartstrings. Step back in time and explore convict jails, old taverns, whaling ships and settlers' cottages and grand National Trust homes in beautifully landscaped grounds.
• Denmark - where towering tall trees meet the ocean. A relaxed village atmosphere, romantic timber milling history and incredible coastal scenery.
• Ningaloo Reef - Take a dive with hundreds of tropical fish, amazing coral formations and the world's biggest fish, the whale shark.
• Monkey Mia - Monkey Mia is one of Western Australia's most famous dolphin watching destinations.
• Shark Bay - The Shark Bay World Heritage Area was Western Australia's first World Heritage Listed site. Shark Bay's wilderness and natural wonders make for a unique holiday.
• The Pinnacles - The extraordinary ancient rock formations are located about a three-hour drive north of Perth near the coastal town of Cervantes.
• Kalgoorlie - Western Australia's largest goldfields town famed for its fascinating gold rush history, fabulous old buildings and old gold miners' ghost towns.
• Esperance - For squeaky-white beaches, getting off the beaten track and bunking down under the stars. This place is so relaxed even the kangaroos sun bake on the beach!
• Bunbury - just two hours drive south of Perth, it is located on a spectacular peninsular surrounded by blue waters of the Indian Ocean, Koombana Bay and the Leschenault Inlet.

Radio Work Experience Internship in Perth

Previously before this placement, I was head of Sport at a community radio station in Liverpool, worked in a news room at a commercial radio station for 6 months or so, and had been involved previously with my student and hospital radio station in the East Midlands.

I came to Perth, WA in May 2011 to start a 3 month placement for a radio. During those 3 months, I managed to get stuck into various things, such as audio editing tasks, script writing and voicing, helping out in the news room, answering phone calls on reception, and yes, the one job everyone does in radio, make the cups of tea. Luckily, being a pom, I can knock out a pretty darn good black tea with 2 sugars.

This might have helped me get a job there… well probably not just the tea making!

Luckily General Manager Bevan Jones decided he could forgive my fairly strong northern English Accent and offered me as a job as a producer. Since I liked the weather here in Perth, and bear in mind, it was winter at the time, which is still by far better than a UK “summer”, this was a no brainer. Plus I enjoyed the very friendly atmosphere at this station, and it was an exciting time to join the ranks, as the place was in the middle of a fairly big shift, with new exciting projects being lined up.

At the moment I’m a Producer and Volunteer Co-ordinator. So if you decide to come to Perth, you’ll have to deal with me! My main roles include looking after the production of the Perth Wildcats basketball coverage. I’ve been to 25 of the 28 games, both here in Perth and interstate.

I’ve managed to see the beautiful Melbourne, Sydney, Cairns, Townsville, Adelaide and erm… Wollongong, which is, shall we say, different.

I’ve also commentated 3 games myself this season, and hopefully the Australian audience can adjust to the shock of a pom commentating the basketball – it sounds a bit weird, apparently. We also, from time to time, cover the local WA State Basketball league, when it gets to the pointy end of the season.

I look after the volunteers from Travellers Worldwide, and local universities here in Perth, assist our technical director with other outside broadcasts and IT around the office or in the studio, and help our production manager and on air team with campaigns and other odd jobs you’d only find at a radio station. My tea making skills are still top notch… well I think, anyway.
