WORK CONTENT AND DESCRIPTION
You'll likely work at two centres, and at both centres you'll spend time sharing
your skills and building confidence and team morale, whilst working towards improving
technique and strategy. What you will offer through coaching is immeasurable in
terms of education in social skills, team work, self development, confidence and
the obvious positive effects it will have on their English language learning.
In the centre in the North the children train three days a week; Monday, Wednesday
and Friday for two sessions, one morning and one evening and at the centre in the
favela they train Monday to Friday afternoons only.
At both centres you will be coaching children and teenagers aged between 6 to 18
and your main role is to assist the coach in all roles from warm up’s, drills, skill
practice, to refereeing and sometimes you can also get involved in playing the game.
Your working hours may vary as you may work solely at one centre or divide your
time between the two. The children have a huge love for football and take it very
seriously so working at this project will be a totally rewarding experience as their
enthusiasm is infectious!
Coaching swimming is also available in conjunction with your football
coaching project; however you need to hold a level one badge or a lifeguard’s certificate
as a minimum requirement.
HOLIDAYS AND CARNAVAL!
There are times when the crèche is closed due to holidays and festivals. Please
see below:
• Summer Holiday: 12th December 2015 to 10th January 2016
• Winter Holiday: 18th July 2016 – 1st August 2016
Carnaval begins at midnight on the Friday before Ash Wednesday (usually
around the second week of February) and last for five days, but the whole country
stops for about two weeks. Carnaval is celebrated all over Brazil. The most famous
is, of course, held in Rio, but the authentic versions of Carnaval are found outside
of Rio.
The dates for 2016 are 5th to 10th February.
With everyone turning out to play,
team Sunscreen headed to the pitches to take on some local talent. The pitches were
all busy as usual for a weekend, but we found one pitch (in slightly better nick
than the last time). With a couple of kids who had a ball and with our broken Portuguese
and lots of random gesturing, we managed to get a game of 5-A-Side going.
The 2 hours in the burning heat was brilliant and we headed home feeling very much
the better for it.
The evening was even more eventful, we’d decided to
go watch Rio’s two biggest teams fight it off in the season’s big derby match –
Fluminense v Vasco!

CAN'T SPEAK THE LANGUAGE?
If you speak some Portuguese (or even Spanish), you will find it very beneficial
on this project. But don't be put off if languages aren't your thing! You're sure
to pick up some of the basic words whilst you are there, and will find other ways
to converse without language becoming a barrier. Don't forget that we can also arrange
some Portuguese Lessons for you during your programme if you'd
like.
